Are Thin People Becoming the Elite of Society?

March 12, 2008 by Editor · Leave a Comment

I recently stumbled onto an small sidebar newspaper article that was published more than ten years ago. It was written as sensationalized warning about the “obesity epidemic.” It’s astounding to think that seeing large, overweight people has become so commonplace. Yet, the media continue to portray the thin body as the dominant type.

It’s no secret that over the last few decades more woman have sought after the coveted skinny body type. Books, diet campaigns and more recently cosmetic surgery are all trying to tell us one thing: We can show you how to get a skinny body.

Skinny bodies aside, it’s well known that the weight loss industry hasn’t exactly done the best job of keeping people thin for extended periods of time. That leaves most people still overweight and if there truly is an obesity problem, the ratios of thin-to-fat people may be leading to a societal shift: Thin people may become the elite of society.

It’s clear that the drive to look younger, thinner, healthier, and more attractive is quickly becoming the norm. We live in a visual society and the people seemingly most want to look tend to be thin ones!

Cosmetic Surgery vs. Plastic Surgery: What’s the difference?

March 12, 2008 by Editor · 1 Comment

Many people want to know the difference between cosmetic and plastic surgery. These days the two terms are frequently used to refer to the same thing, as both have become a major part of pop culture. There are no absolute definitions but here is a way to look at the two terms that should help clarify your understanding of the difference.

Plastic surgery procedures didn’t start as a way to enhance someone’s outwardly appearance. They grew out of the necessity to help an individual on a medical basis. Eventually people came to realize that plastic surgery techniques could be used to alter someone’s aesthetic appearance. As such, there are now two main areas within plastic surgery: Reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive surgeons focus on helping people look “normal.” For example, some who was in an car accident and had their nose bashed. The surgeon would essentially reconstruct the person’s nose.

On the other hand, cosmetic surgeons perform procedures to help people achieve a specific look that they believe will make them look more attractive. For example, someone with a large nose may want to undergo cosmetic surgery to make it smaller and more attractive.

Note that board certification in plastic surgery does not necessarily mean that an individual is well suited to perform cosmetic surgery.

Many cosmetic surgeons now choose to only focus on the face. That’s one reason why we’re seeing growth in the area of facial plastic surgery as a specialist area. Also, some specialists in other fields now perform plastic surgery. For example, Ophthalmologists may offer blepharoplasty as a service.

In the end, you should always pay careful attention to who you go to for plastic surgery. Many procedures have risks that may outweigh your goals of looking better.
